Transportation to & from Salt Spring Island

General:

  • When booking flights, you may fly either to Vancouver, BC, and then take a scheduled float plane to Ganges on Salt Spring, or fly to Victoria, BC, and then take a short scheduled ferry crossing from Swartz Bay to Fulford Harbour on Salt Spring. This means you will have to coordinate your flights with the float plane/ferry schedules.
  • Also please keep in mind that we have a “meet and greet” social at our home/studio, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on the evening before the workshop starts, so that you can meet your fellow class participants and tour the studio.
  • If you do wish to rent a car it is most convenient to do so at the airport; however, if you want you can rent on the island at Salt Spring Marine Car and Truck Rentals (1-250-537-5464) OR at Little Beaver Car Rentals (1-250-537-9600).
  • If you do not wish to rent a car, we will meet you at the ferry in Fulford or at the Float Plane Terminal in Ganges, take you to your accommodation, and return you to the ferry/float plane terminal at the end of the workshop.
  • If you stay at our recommended accommodation, Harbour House Hotel in Ganges, we also offer to drive you back and forth for the workshops on a daily basis; however, if you choose to stay elsewhere on the island, you will have to provide your own transportation to and from the studio.

Booking Details:

Flying to Victoria, British Columbia:

  • After collecting your bags, collect your rental car, drive to the ferry terminal, and go to the Gulf Islands/Salt Spring Island booth to buy your ticket; the ferry crossing takes 35 minutes; we will send you instructions on how to get to your accommodation
  • If you do not wish to rent a car, take the ten-minute cab ride to the ferry terminal, and board as a foot passenger; the ferry crossing takes 35 minutes and we will meet you at the other side and take you to your accommodation
  • Note that you should give yourself at least an hour from the time that you touch down in Victoria to the time you board the ferry, especially if you are renting a car at the airport; anything less than an hour will be touch and go for making the ferry
  • If you can’t make the last ferry crossing that day because of the way your flights work out, you can spend the night in Sidney (very close to the airport and the ferry terminal, stay at the Best Western Emerald Isle, 1-800-315-3377) and then catch the first ferry crossing the next morning (7:00 AM) and still make it in time for the beginning of the workshop
  • The BC ferries web site can be found at www.bcferries.com
  • For fares, go to www.bcferries.com/fares
  • For schedules go to www.bcferries.com/schedules
  • I have also appended the relevant schedules at the end of this page.

Flying to Vancouver, British Columbia:

  • 10-minute cab ride or free shuttle to seaplane terminals located on the Richmond River; from there, 20 minute flight (or less), lands directly in Ganges Harbour on Salt Spring Island
  • We will meet your plane and take you to your accommodation.
  • For information on Seair Seaplanes schedules, fares, and booking, go to www.seairseaplanes.com; fares are approximately $80 one way
  • For information on Harbour Air schedules, fares, and booking, go to
    www.harbour-air.com
; fares are approximately $95 one way
  • For information on Salt Spring Air schedules, fares, and booking, go to www.saltspringair.com; fares are approximately $87 one way

Please note, there is a ferry from Vancouver that goes to Long Harbour on Salt Spring, but we do not recommend taking this; it requires a $50+ cab ride from the airport to the ferry terminal, and there are very few scheduled direct ferries which usually means a 3-hour “milk-run” crossing. If you want to take the ferry, it is much more convenient to fly to Victoria.
